TV Play-By-Play Sizzle ReelSports Reporter Sizzle Reel |
Hello! I'm Tommy Valentine, and welcome to my digital portfolio! I am a sports reporter with NEWS10 ABC in Albany, NY, with a background in television play-by-play. I'm coming up on two years with NEWS10 in July 2024.
During my time in the Capital Region, I've had the pleasure of covering a wide range of events, leagues and teams. I assisted my sports director with our coverage of the 2023 and 2024 NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments that came through Albany. I shot, edited and wrote highlights for quarterfinal games of the 2023 NCAA men's lacrosse tournament held at the University at Albany, and also worked with the Premier Lacrosse League to preview the 2023 Opening Weekend, which was also hosted by UAlbany. I traveled to Atlantic City for the 2023 MAAC basketball tournament to follow Siena College, and also made trips to Manhattan College and Fairfield University for the 2023 MAAC men's and women's lacrosse championships, again following Siena. During the 2023 football season, we provided extensive coverage on UAlbany, which reached the semifinals of the FCS playoffs. At the professional level, I've worked closely with the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL, the Albany FireWolves of the NLL and the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Frontier League. However, perhaps my most rewarding experiences have been covering high school athletics. One of my favorite roles has been serving as the in-field reporter during our "1st & 10" shows on Friday nights for high school football. Every week, I would be sent to our "Game of the Week". My responsibilities included a live interview during our 6:00 show with one of the head coaches (we'd meet with the other team/head coach during the week). I'd then shoot and edit that game, grab postgame reactions, and after my sports director read the highlight, he'd throw it to me on the field during our 10:30 and 11:00 shows for a live, or look-live recap. I've also covered a number of NYSPHSAA championship games for soccer, football, basketball, girls ice hockey and baseball. Prior to landing my first sports reporter job, I did freelance play-by-play work for Charter Communications/Spectrum in Buffalo, NY, in the Fall 2021. I called Section VI Friday night high school football games, which were broadcast on Spectrum News 1. I graduated from St. Bonaventure University in May 2021 with a bachelor's degree in sports media. I transferred there after earning an associate degree in electronic media communications at Onondaga Community College. Throughout my four years of college, I had the pleasure of calling numerous games for both St. Bonaventure and SUNY Morrisville while I was at OCC. All the athletic events I provided play-by-play for at Bonaventure were aired on ESPN+. My specialty sports are football, basketball and baseball, but I have called a variety of other sports, including lacrosse, ice hockey and volleyball. I provide a more in-depth look into my broadcasting experiences in the "Play-By-Play Work" section. After graduating from Chittenango High School in the small town of Chittenango, NY (just outside of Syracuse), I elected to stay close to home and attend OCC. I was extremely fortunate during my time there to learn from some of the best, most experienced people in the TV business. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Bonaventure, and through SBU's Jandoli School of Communication, I earned both the Koop Award for excellence in broadcasting, and the Paul Wieland Award for excellence in sports media. I am honored to say that I was one of the few seniors ever in the Jandoli School to have been recognized with two senior awards. My collegiate career was capped off with a top-20 finish in the 2020-21 William Randolph Hearst Foundation Television News Competition. And in May 2021, I was named a finalist for the 2021 Jim Nantz Award, ranked as the 15th-best collegiate sports broadcaster in the country by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA).
