TV Play-By-Play Sizzle ReelSports Reporter Sizzle Reel |
Hello! I'm Tommy Valentine, and welcome to my digital portfolio! I am a play-by-play broadcaster and sports reporter looking for a full-time position. Most recently, I did freelance play-by-play work for Charter Communications/Spectrum in Buffalo, NY. I called Section VI Friday night high school football games, which were broadcast on Spectrum News 1. I graduated from St. Bonaventure University in May 2021 with a bachelor's degree in sports media.
Throughout my four years of college, I had the pleasure of calling numerous games for two institutions: SUNY Morrisville and St. Bonaventure University. All the athletic events I provided play-by-play for at St. Bonaventure were aired on ESPN+. My specialty sports are football, basketball, and baseball, but I have experience calling a variety of other sports, including men's lacrosse, ice hockey, and volleyball. I will go more in-depth about my broadcasting career in the "Play-By-Play Work" section. After graduating from Chittenango High School in the small town of Chittenango, NY, just outside of Syracuse (where I still reside), I went on to attend Onondaga Community College for two years. In my time there, I learned invaluable behind-the-scenes and technical skills required to orchestrate a televised production. My second year at OCC was more news/sports reporter-focused. I was extremely fortunate during my time at OCC to learn from some of the best, most experienced people in the TV business. They provided me with countless, unique opportunities, including working stats for numerous productions of Syracuse University men's and women's basketball games, working as a utility for MLB Network three times during Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, and working stats for the 2019 The Basketball Tournament (TBT). Upon transferring to St. Bonaventure University, I immediately got involved with SBU-TV, the campus' student-run news station, as well as ESPN+. I began as a news reporter with SBU-TV during the fall 2020 semester, producing a news package every week, and then I transitioned to being a sports reporter in the spring semester, before being promoted to sports director, a role I held throughout my senior year. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Bonaventure, and through SBU's Jandoli School of Communication, I earned both the Koop Award for excellence in broadcasting, and the Paul Wieland Award for excellence in sports media. I am honored to say that I am one of the few seniors ever in the Jandoli School to have been recognized with two senior awards. My collegiate career was capped off with a top-20 finish in the 2020-21 William Randolph Hearst Foundation Television News Competition. And in May 2021, I was named a finalist for the 2021 Jim Nantz Award, ranked as the 15th-best collegiate sports broadcaster in the country by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA).
